Criterion Games developed Burnout 3: Takedown, and Electronic Arts published it in 2004 for Xbox and PlayStation 2. The series' third entry introduced Takedowns, rival-wrecking hits that fuel an increasingly aggressive boost meter, alongside more than sixty races spread across the United States, Europe and the Far East.
The game added Crash mode, pure choreographed pileups at traffic intersections, plus online multiplayer for up to six players across seven different modes. It raised the bar for the arcade racing genre with its speed and pacing, and is regarded as one of the best racing games of the entire generation.
