Burnout 2: Point of Impact was developed by Criterion Games and published by Acclaim Entertainment in 2002 for PlayStation 2 and GameCube, with an Xbox version — subtitled Developer's Cut — arriving in May 2003. That edition added exclusive content: fifteen additional crash intersections and twenty-one custom car skins over the other platforms.
The Xbox version also added progressive-scan video, 5.1 sound and the option to build a custom soundtrack from music stored on the console. Point of Impact honed the pacing and handling of the Burnout formula right before Takedown pushed it into its most recognized form.
