Dark Legacy expanded on the Gauntlet Legends formula with new levels, characters, and items, keeping intact the series' essence since its arcade origins in the '80s: up to four players roaming dungeons, gathering gold, and surviving waves of enemies. Development was handled by Midway Games West, and the Xbox version arrived in 2002, a year after the arcade debut.
For a console betting heavily on local multiplayer, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy fit right in as a straightforward cooperative-action alternative, an heir to a franchise that had already spent two decades defining the group hack-and-slash genre.
