Unlike the PC Age of Empires games, this DS spin-off — developed by Griptonite Games and published by THQ in 2008 — swapped real-time base building and resource management for turn-based tactical combat on hexagonal boards, centered on heroes and mythological units from Greek, Egyptian, and Norse gods, inherited from Age of Mythology. It was, in effect, the way Ensemble Studios' franchise found to sneak onto a handheld with no mouse or keyboard.
It remained a curiosity within the DS strategy catalog, appreciated by those already coming from Age of Mythology on PC and looking for something manageable in pocket form, though it never reached the recognition of its bigger siblings.
