Aurail breaks SNK's usual mold a bit: instead of a beat 'em up or a fighting game, it offers a top-down shooter where soldiers level up and improve their arsenal as they advance, borrowing a logic closer to action-RPG than pure shooting.
It's a little-remembered experiment within the brand's catalog, overshadowed by the big names the company would consolidate shortly after on the Neo Geo. For anyone who only knows SNK for its fighters, it's a surprise: the studio also tried its luck in very different genres.
