Block Out takes the Tetris concept into three dimensions: instead of completing a horizontal row, you must fill entire layers inside a cubic well using volumetric polyomino pieces, rotating them across all three axes as they fall. It came out in 1989 for arcade, home computers, and later consoles, getting years ahead of the wave of three-dimensional fitting games that would follow.
It's one of the most ambitious and well-executed variants of the block-fitting genre, demanding for the extra difficulty of thinking in volume rather than just on a plane. It remains a required reference for anyone interested in how the Tetris formula evolved outside Russia and Japan.
