Columns, created by Sega in 1990, drops columns of three colored gems that must be lined up in groups of three or more to clear them, in a formula that would become the foundation of the entire 'match three' subgenre. It was Sega's great battle horse to compete with the Tetris phenomenon. Its influence is still felt today in any gem-matching game: Columns didn't invent the idea of chaining combos, but it simplified it to such an elegant level that it became the de facto standard of the genre for years.
