DoDonPachi, developed by Cave in 1997, perfected the formula the company had debuted with DonPachi: screens covered in enemy projectiles, scoring systems based on chains and combos, and a difficulty designed both for the casual player and the expert who memorizes every pattern. It quickly became one of the most venerated shooters of the genre. Its legacy is enormous: it laid the groundwork for modern 'danmaku' or bullet hell, a subgenre that still has communities today dedicated to chasing the perfect score, and it established Cave as the absolute reference studio for Japanese shmups.
