Donkey Kong 3 completely abandons the platforming formula of the two previous entries and has exterminator Stanley spray insecticide at Donkey Kong and a swarm of bees to protect a greenhouse, in a fixed-screen shooting format closer to Space Invaders than to Donkey Kong. Nintendo released it in 1983, in an attempt to stretch the brand toward a different genre. It's the black sheep of the original trilogy: it never reached the recognition of the first two Donkey Kong games, but it remains a required piece for understanding Nintendo's early years in arcades, when the company was still trying out different genres under the same character.
