Fighting Fantasy pits armored warriors against each other in one-on-one or one-versus-many combats within a medieval fantasy hippodrome, with a roster of rivals considerably more creative than other fighting games of the era: giant dragons, lizard men, sorcerers. The player can also buy weapons between fights, each more effective against certain rival types.
It came out in March 1989 in Japan, barely two years before Street Fighter II completely redefined the fighting genre, which is why it's studied today as part of that transitional stage in which fighting games hadn't yet found their definitive grammar.
