1943 - The Battle of Midway is the sequel to the arcade game 1942: a vertically scrolling shooter that puts the player in command of an American fighter in the Pacific of World War II, dodging enemy waves and collecting power-ups for the weaponry. It reached European computers in the late 80s, within the wave of home conversions of Japanese arcade games that defined much of the catalog of the time.
With battleship-shaped end-of-stage bosses and a dodge-and-shoot rhythm inherited straight from the arcade, it remains a faithful postcard of how Europe experienced the arcade shooter on home computers before the genre migrated to consoles.
