Afterburner is the port Activision published for the Atari ST of Sega's arcade classic, a third-person air combat simulator that in the arcades came with a hydraulic cockpit and surround sound. The conversion was handled by Argonaut Software, which had to recreate with the ST's limited capabilities much of the sense of speed and depth that made the original shine.
As happened with many ports of technically demanding arcade games, the ST version fell well short of the arcade in fluidity and detail, something the magazines of the day acknowledged. Even so it keeps its place as a document of how far home hardware was stretched to chase the eighties fantasy of air combat.
