Checkers is Atari's adaptation of the classic checkers game, with a board simplified to the max by the 2600's graphical limits and an AI designed to offer different difficulty levels. It's part of the first generation of cartridges Atari itself released to give its console thematic variety beyond pure action. As a virtual board game, its appeal was always more utilitarian than spectacular: offering an alternative to the physical board for anyone who already had the console hooked up to the TV, at a time when any excuse would do to justify buying new cartridges.
