Freeway, designed by David Crane for Activision in 1981, reduces the challenge to its purest expression: guide a chicken across a ten-lane highway dodging constant traffic, scoring a point every time you reach the other side. It's one of the most cited examples of how Activision achieved memorable designs with minimal mechanics within the 2600's extreme limitations. Its absolute simplicity is also its greatest virtue: decades later it still works as a lesson in pure reflex design, without a single line of text or extra system to distract from the central challenge.
