General Computer Corporation had developed a chip that unofficially improved Atari's original "Pac-Man" for the 2600, and instead of suing them, Atari bought the project from them and turned it into the official conversion of "Ms. Pac-Man," with more varied mazes, ghosts with less predictable movement, and in-between-level animations, all much more faithful to the arcade than the criticized original Pac-Man port. The result ended up being one of the best-selling cartridges in all of 2600 history.
It's still rightly considered the best home conversion of a Namco classic the console ever had, and a curious case of how a piracy threat ended up saving Atari's reputation when it came to arcade conversions.
