RealSports Soccer is the soccer game Atari developed and published in 1983 for the Atari 2600 and Atari 5200, with a specific version programmed by John Seghers for the latter console: the field scrolls horizontally across three screens' width, the human player controls the player with the ball while the computer handles the rest of the team, and for the first time the goalkeepers also respond to artificial intelligence instead of staying fixed.
Critical reception at the time was mixed: the graphics were praised, better than those of Atari's original Championship Soccer, but the lack of realism and the tactical simplicity of the whole were questioned. It's, in any case, one more chapter in Atari's long tradition of trying, again and again, to figure out the world's most popular sport.
