Robotron: 2084 was born in arcades in 1982 as one of the high points of the free-scrolling shooter genre: the player must rescue the last surviving humans while being surrounded by ever-larger waves of killer robots, moving and firing in independent directions using two separate controllers. Atari brought that formula to several of its systems over the years — among them the 5200 and the 7800, developed by General Computer Corporation, and later the Lynx, courtesy of Shadowsoft — each version adapted to the technical limits of its hardware. Whatever platform you play it on, the core holds up: one of the most demanding reflex tests the golden age of arcades ever produced, and a solid reason why the name Robotron still comes up in any conversation about foundational shooters.
