Xevious is the port of Namco's classic 1983 vertical shooter, one of the first games to distinguish between airborne enemies, which you take out with direct fire, and ground targets, which require bombs — a distinction that laid the groundwork for much of the genre's later design.
Its arrival in the Atari catalog confirms the influence this Japanese arcade game had on the Western industry, and it's still studied as one of the foundational shooters that wrote the rulebook for the shmup genre.
