AeroFighters Assault marked the turn of the Aero Fighters series (Sonic Wings in Japan), born as a 2D arcade-board shoot 'em up, toward three-dimensional air combat. It was developed by Paradigm Entertainment, the same studio behind Pilotwings 64, and that lineage shows in the solidity of the flight: missions with concrete objectives, planes that each handle differently, and a camera designed to read aerial combat clearly.
It was largely overshadowed by Star Fox 64, published the same year and backed by Nintendo's weight, but for anyone looking for an arcade air-combat simulator with its own identity on the console, it remains a solid and little-explored option.
