Before Burnout became synonymous with spectacular destruction with Takedown and Revenge, this first Criterion Games installment already offered the base formula: racing at the edge of risk, punishing infractions with slow motion, and rewarding reckless driving on real-traffic tracks.
It's the seed of one of the best arcade racing sagas the generation produced, and although it was overshadowed by its more polished sequels, it remains a fascinating starting point for understanding how Criterion refined its formula throughout PS2's lifespan.
