Digimon World 4 changed the saga's direction toward cooperative action-RPG, with up to four players controlling digimon through dungeons and real-time battles, setting aside the raising and management system that defined the early Digimon World entries. The decision split the original franchise's followers.
Today it's remembered as a genre experiment within the saga, closer to a cooperative dungeon crawler than a monster simulator, with an audience that values it precisely for that shift toward pure action.
