Rugby 06, developed by EA Canada alongside HB Studios and published by EA Sports in 2006, expanded the roster of playable national teams and added the calendar's biggest tournaments: the Rugby World Cup, the Tri Nations, and the Six Nations, plus the Super 14 at club level. It was the most complete entry of EA's brief run sustaining its own rugby franchise.
The game aimed for a faster pace than its predecessors, with reworked animations for the rucks, mauls, and tackles that define the sport, trying to capture the controlled brutality that makes rugby such a distinctive spectacle. For fans of the oval ball who found no representation in other sports catalogs, Rugby 06 was, for a while, the best option available on console.
