Like much of the war software copied on floppies in Europe during the 80s and 90s, 1944 takes its name from the most symbolic year of the Western front, that of Normandy, to offer tactical decisions in that setting. There is no confirmed data on its developer or exact origin, something common among minor releases that never had coverage in the specialist press. It is, in that sense, representative of the huge volume of niche war software that accompanied Atari computers in Europe: games made for an audience fond of military history, without the ambition of an SSI or a MicroProse, but with the same spirit of a sand table turned into a disk.
