Call of Duty 3 marked a quiet but important break in the saga: it was the first main installment not developed by Infinity Ward but by Treyarch, and the first designed exclusively for consoles, with no PC version. Set in the campaign to liberate France after the Normandy landing, it kept the cinematic scale that already characterized the franchise.
For followers of the saga it's a key piece for understanding the studio's transition toward the leadership it would later take with Black Ops. It still retains that pulse of choreographed war action that defined mid-2000s war shooters.
