Berzerk is a maze shooter released in 1980 by Stern Electronics, with the player trapped in geometric rooms full of shooting robots and walls that electrocute on contact. Its trademark was the pioneering use of voice synthesis for the robots' taunts, and the appearance of Evil Otto, an unstoppable smiley face that sped up the pace of any match that dragged on too long. It's a foundational piece of the maze shooter and a direct precursor of how arcades began flirting with digitized audio as a design tool, long before that became common currency.
