Blaster was designed by Eugene Jarvis -the same person behind Defender and Robotron: 2084- for Williams in 1983, and it transplants that obsession with controlled chaos into a pseudo-3D tunnel generated with scaled sprites, in the same family of ideas as Zaxxon or Tempest. The player advances firing at waves of enemies emerging from the back of the screen, with an ever-increasing sense of speed screen after screen.
Commercially it didn't repeat Robotron's success, partly because it arrived at a moment of American arcade market saturation right before the 1983 crash, but for Jarvis followers it's a key piece of his most experimental period with scaled graphics.
