Cabal is a fixed-perspective shooter released in 1988, in which the player controls a crosshair independent of the on-screen character -via trackball or joystick, depending on the cabinet- to eliminate enemy soldiers and dodge their grenades by ducking. That separation between movement and aiming was a novelty that marked an entire batch of shooters of the era, among them NAM-1975 or Blood Bros. itself. It's a key piece for understanding the lineage of the late-80s Japanese trackball shooter: less cited than its direct heirs, but the one that put the formula on the table.
