Toward the end of the Atari 2600's commercial life, European publishers without an Atari license took advantage of a market that was still buying cartridges to release cheap variations on the ship shooters that had defined the console a decade earlier. "Alien's Return" is one of those titles: waves of invaders, vertical shooting, the same old formula without much of a twist, made to fill a store shelf rather than to leave a mark.
Its interest today is almost archaeological: it documents how the unofficial European scene kept the 2600 alive long after the market had collapsed in the United States.
