Demon Attack, published by Imagic in 1981, pits the player against waves of flying demons that attack in increasingly aggressive formations, changing shape and splitting apart when hit mid-flight. Its technical execution — smooth animation, good use of color, precise shooting — quickly put it among the best-selling games in the Atari 2600's unofficial catalog, and helped establish Imagic as one of the most respected third-party companies of the era. More than forty years later it still shows up on lists of the console's best games.
