Gravitar is the vector-graphics arcade game Atari released in 1982: the player's ship has to enter the orbit of different planets, resist their gravitational pull, destroy enemy bunkers, and rescue crew members, all while managing fuel with near-surgical care. It was a more demanding twist on the formula Atari had been exploring since Asteroids and Lunar Lander, combining shooting, navigation, and real gravitational physics into a single challenge.
Its difficulty, considered extremely high even by the standards of the time, made it a cult arcade game rather than a mass hit. Today it's remembered as one of the most ambitious design exercises in Atari's vector catalog, the kind of game that rewards patience far more than pure reflexes.
