Outlaw is the game David Crane designed for Atari in 1978, barely a year after joining the company, and his first published work under that label: a variation on the 1975 arcade game Gun Fight where one or two players face off in Wild West duels, with obstacles like cacti, walls, or stagecoaches standing between the shooters depending on the chosen variant. The cartridge offered sixteen different game modes.
According to Crane himself, Outlaw sold more than half a million units, a remarkable result for one of the early works of someone who years later would found Activision and become one of the most influential designers of the Atari 2600 era.
