Phoenix, published by Atari for the 2600 based on Centuri's 1980 arcade game, pits the player against waves of prehistoric and mechanical birds that regenerate in increasingly complex ways, culminating in a battle against a mothership whose core must be penetrated by shooting at just the right moment. It's one of the golden-era arcade shooters with a particularly memorable level structure for its time. The home version preserves that rising difficulty progression and that distinctive final battle, which made it one of the most solid arcade conversions in the Atari 2600's shooter catalog.
