Planet Patrol, published by Spectravision in 1982 for Atari 2600, is a side-scrolling shooter in the tradition of Defender and Chopper Command: the player's ship, positioned on the right side of the screen, flies left, firing at enemy ships and dodging their fire while flying over the planet itself. Its distinctive contribution is a day-and-night cycle that changes the stage's color palette, along with a refueling mechanism that forces careful route planning. It includes one- and two-player variants, expanding the options of a genre that used to be limited to the solo experience.
