Protector was published in 1999 courtesy of Songbird Productions, revisiting the free-movement territory-defense formula that had made 1981's Defender famous: the player commands the ship Starblade to protect the planetoid Haven-7 from successive waves of alien invaders, following the outbreak of an interstellar war. This 2002 Special Edition added new waves and enemies, additional landscapes, and boss fights, plus general gameplay improvements over the original version. By 2002 it had already sold around five hundred copies, a number that made it the most successful title in Songbird's entire Jaguar catalog, and it remains one of the essential names when discussing the system's homebrew scene.
