Space War ~ Space Combat refers, in its premise, to Spacewar!, the game a group of MIT students programmed in 1962 for the PDP-1 computer and which is today considered one of the first digital video games in history: two ships face off in the vacuum of space, with the gravity of a central star complicating every maneuver. That original formula of a space duel with orbital physics was replicated, with variants, in countless cartridges of the Atari 2600's golden era.
Beyond that general lineage, there isn't enough reliable documentation to pin down the specific development of this particular version with certainty. It is, in any case, a direct heir to one of the foundational ideas of video games as a medium.
