Super Cobra, Konami's 1981 arcade game and spiritual successor to Scramble, puts the player in command of a helicopter that has to cross mountain ranges and underground tunnels, firing on enemy installations while dodging the terrain, in a horizontal-scrolling shooter that was a huge arcade hit for distributor Stern in the United States. The Atari 2600 version, published by Parker Brothers in 1983, translated that low-altitude flying challenge to the home console with notable skill. The conversion won a Certificate of Merit for best action video game at the 1983 Arkie Awards, a recognition that confirms how well it was received at the time despite its technical limitations compared to the original arcade game.
