Known commercially as Tempest 2000, this take on the 1981 arcade classic hit the Jaguar in 1994 courtesy of Llamasoft, the studio run by British programmer Jeff Minter: building on the original's three-dimensional tube and the ship firing toward the center of the screen, Minter piled on an explosion of psychedelic visual effects, his own electronic soundtrack, and extra game modes that completely multiplied the original experience. It arrived just when Atari desperately needed a flagship title for the Jaguar, and found one in this reinvention. It's still regarded today as the masterpiece of the Jaguar catalog, and one of the main reasons the console keeps a loyal fanbase three decades after its release.
