Body Harvest has the player defend different eras of Earth —from 1916 to a distant future— against an alien invasion harvesting humanity, roaming open maps on foot or behind the wheel of any vehicle in reach. It was developed by DMA Design, the Scottish studio that very shortly after, already under the name Rockstar North, would create Grand Theft Auto, and it shows: the freedom to move through a large world and grab whatever's at hand was, in many ways, a rehearsal of those ideas.
It was overshadowed at the time by the noise of other releases, but today it's revisited precisely for that lineage: it's one of the missing links between the earliest experiments in 3D open worlds and what GTA III would end up consolidating years later.
