Dragon Quarter abandons the colorful tone of previous installments for a decaying underground setting, and replaces the unhurried pace of the traditional JRPG with a SOL tension gauge that rises with every battle and party death, pushing the player toward more careful playthroughs and toward New Game Plus as part of the design. It was developed in-house by Capcom.
Its difficulty and its break with the saga's expectations divided the fanbase at the time, but over the years it earned a cult status among those who value design risk over comfort. It's one of the most singular JRPG experiences PS2 produced.
