Capcom broke with the saga's colorful tone to propose a dystopian, underground world, where Ryu and his companions escape a caste society while managing a Dragon gauge that, once depleted, ends the game with no turning back: a design decision that prioritized tension and resource management over comfortable exploration. Reception was divided between those who valued the risk and those who missed the more classic RPG of previous installments.
Over time it became a cult work: it's revisited today as one of the boldest experiments Capcom allowed itself within a genre it rarely touched with such freedom.
