Castlevania: Curse of Darkness follows Hector, a former disciple of Dracula who abandoned the ranks of evil and now must face his former comrade Isaac, with a combat system based on melee weapons and the ability to summon captured demons that fight alongside him. Konami bet on this 3D action-and-crafting approach instead of the non-linear exploration that had defined the saga since Symphony of the Night.
It's divisive among classic Castlevania fans, but as 3D action with gear progression it has merits of its own, and today it's played as a curiosity within a saga that rarely ventured so far from the metroidvania format.
