Othello adapts the board game of the same name, created in Japan in the 1970s from a variant of the classic British Reversi: two players alternately place pieces on an eight-by-eight board, capturing the opponent's pieces by flanking them with their own, in a game where the advantage can change hands right up to the final move. Its arrival on the Atari 2600 was part of a broader wave of classic board game adaptations aimed at widening the console's audience beyond pure action. It's a pure exercise in positional strategy, with no frills or narrative, faithful to the original's rules.
