Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was developed by Snowblind Studios and published by Interplay Entertainment, debuting on PlayStation 2 in late 2001 and arriving on Xbox in 2002. Unlike the saga's PC RPGs, it offered isometric action combat, with three playable characters — the dwarf Kromlech, the archer Vahn and the sorceress Adrianna — pushing through cooperative dungeons.
Its engine, the Dark Alliance Engine, ended up reused in other games of the era, like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. It sold more than a million copies across its three versions and stood as one of that generation's benchmark hack-and-slash titles, on top of spawning a direct sequel.
