Fable was developed by Big Blue Box Studios, a satellite studio of Lionhead Studios, and published by Microsoft Game Studios in 2004 for Xbox. Set in the kingdom of Albion, it followed a hero's path from childhood to adulthood, with a good-evil alignment system that changed the character's appearance and how the world reacted to them.
Expectations before release — fueled by Peter Molyneux himself — were enormous, and although the finished game trimmed several of its promises, it sold more than three million copies, enough for Lionhead to absorb Big Blue Box. Fable stood as one of Xbox's flagship Western RPGs and launched a saga that continued on the 360.
