Astrowar has the player shooting down a succession of cosmic threats — shooting stars, unidentified ships, spinning bombs, and space monsters — while dodging their attacks, with speed that increases as the score climbs. It went through different editions and names depending on the territory: in Germany it circulated as Meteor Defense, and in the UK as Missile War. It's a typical fixed shooter from the first generation of Atari 2600 cartridges, the kind that defined the shooter's visual vocabulary before the genre got more sophisticated.
